Clark Cemetery

Clark Cemetery was established in 1860 when 120 acres of land was purchased by Algernon Sidney Bonham, who immediately discovered that the property encompassed 121 acres after a survey was made. The grantor, Edwin Clark, agreed to include the extra property in the purchase and the gentlemen chose the name of the cemetery by flipping a coin. Since the burial site was named in honor of Edwin Clark, the adjoining road became “Bonham” in honor of Algernon Bonham.

The cemetery is located on top of a hill on Franklin Avenue near Bennett Avenue and is supposed to be open on Memorial Day.*  The road to the cemetery has been closed. This action was taken in an effort to minimize vandalism to the remaining gravestones.

The care of the cemetery has been transferred to the City of Council Bluffs.

The cemetery was read right to left, starting with the row nearest the entrance.   It was read Memorial Day weekend, 2001.

*I was back up to Clark Cemetery on Memorial Day, 2002 at approximately 1:00 p.m. and the cemetery was not open.  You can walk around or under the gate, but you cannot drive up to it.
