Newtown Cemetery

Newtown Cemetery lies SW SW in Section 22 of Knox Township at the site of the old town of Newtown. It is one mile south of Avoca and was the cemetery for the town of Newtown. One acre of land for a cemetery was purchased from the farm of Henry Peterson about 1864, but there were already several graves located here at the time.

The first registered burial was Carrie Randall on October 24, 1884. Her death resulted from cholera. The last burial was in 1951. Tradition indicates “when the cemetery was fenced in 1864, there were several graves left outside the new fencing, but no one paid any attention because they were they graves of horse thieves.”

The cemetery is preserved and cared for by the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 97.
