Mormon Cemetery

Located in Grove Township, four miles east of Macedonia on County Road G 66/Pioneer Trail.  It has been called the Mormon Cemetery and the L.D.S. Cemetery because it is on the Mormon Trail and many of the people buried there belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The L.D.S. Church was organized in 1863.  The original members were John Smith and wife, Sarah; E. W. Knapp and wife, Melissa; A. J. Fields and wife, Sarah; James Otto and wife Mehitable; Joseph Levi Graybill and wife, Patience; John Winegar and wife, Elizabeth; Joseph Smith and wife, Rachel and Stephen Smith.  Many of these members are buried there.

The burial plots are not in square lots, but are six feet wide and go all the way through the cemetery.  Therefore, a family was buried in a straight line from north to south.  This does not mean burial space was not allowed to others outside the family.

The oldest burial is that of Peter Frain, October 12, 1861, who’s stone is still visible.

(The cemetery was read left to right, starting in the northeast corner, September 29 and October 6, 2001.)
