Avoca Graceland Cemetery

On August 21, 1872, G. Deidrich purchased from B. F. Allen, ten acres of land in the north part of Avoca, for a cemetery. This plot was in the SE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 4, Knox Township. Mr. Deidrich was acting as agent for the citizens of Avoca. Later, ten acres were added, but five of this was laid aside for the Catholic Church to use as their cemetery. In January 1948, the five acres were returned to the town.

Approximately one hundred and thirty-one veteran’s flags decorate the Avenue of Flags on Memorial Day and other special days throughout the year. These are maintained by the Boy Scouts and the Avenue of Flags Committee with donations and help being received from the citizens of Avoca.

From Interstate 80, take the mile marker 40 exit and head south on Highway 59. The cemetery lies on the right side of the highway.
